Iron Blight Beginner Guide: Surviving the First Night

Start by accepting what the game hides

Iron Blight deliberately removes the interface. There is no health bar, no ammo counter and no intrusive menus — the Steam store page calls this out as a design pillar, and it is the single biggest adjustment for anyone coming from a modern shooter. Everything you would normally read off a HUD, you have to get from the world and from your own character: how a magazine feels when you check it, what the room sounds like, whether the thing you shot actually stopped moving.

That has one practical consequence for a new player. You cannot improvise. Decisions have to be made before a fight starts, because mid-fight you have no numbers to consult.

Ammo is the difficulty setting

The store description is blunt about it: every bullet matters, and gunfire draws more of them to your position. Players hitting the apartment-building section of the campaign report getting walled by ammo scarcity outright — one thread on the Steam forums is a player asking whether more ammo exists anywhere, with replies pointing them at specific rooms and telling them which enemies to simply ignore.

Three habits that follow from that:

  • Skip what you can. Aggroing a heavy and then quitting to menu was reported by one player as a way to undo a bad engagement and save the rounds. Whether that is intended is unconfirmed, but it tells you how players value ammunition here.
  • Gib heads. A gibbed head means the body does not get back up. Patch 1.01 shipped a potential fix for killed zombies standing up again, which means bodies staying down was not a given even at launch.
  • Use melee for the cheap kills. One achievement exists purely for gibbing a head with a melee weapon; that is the game telling you melee is a real option, not a last resort.

Learn the kick early

The kick stuns zombies and pushes groups back. Two of the game’s 22 achievements are built around it — one for stunning 20 zombies, one for pushing four mutants with a single kick — which is a strong hint that the developers expect it to be part of your normal loop rather than a panic button. It costs no resources, and the distance it buys is usually enough to reach a door.

What to do about the enemies you cannot handle

Not everything in Prasnova is a fair fight. The bug report thread includes a player noting that the Leaper kills from full health in one hit, and heavy enemies like the Gora and Kuvalda each have a dedicated achievement for being killed at all. Treat those as environmental hazards until you have the ammunition to make a decision.

Full breakdown on the enemy threat ranks page, and what to spend on each in the weapons list.

Three things that were broken at launch

If you started playing during launch week, some of what looked like your mistakes were bugs, all addressed on 26 August 2026:

  • The exterior dormitory map displayed upside down.
  • Keybinds showed the wrong key and could not be rebound.
  • The punch card puzzle failed on the first attempt even with the correct code entered.

The full list is on the patch history page. Update before you assume a section is unfair.

Where to go next

Once you are past the prologue, the chapter walkthrough covers the order the game gives you its locations, and the inventory and reloading guide covers checking a magazine by hand — the mechanic most likely to get you killed while you are still learning it.
